What makes a coffee shop good?
Cofee shops are a core gathering place for socializing, business, and personal time. As someone who works remotely, I regularly visit coffee shops for the change in scene from my home office. I'm fortunate that I live within a short walk to about nine coffee shops. However, I pretty much rotate between three of them that I find to be "the best".
But, what makes a coffee shop good? There are a number of factors you can consider, but I'd like to focus on the few I believe contribute most to why some are beloved and preferred more than others.
Coffee
Obvious, I know. If the coffee isn't any good, then you aren't off to a good start in being a good coffee shop. This of course depends on how much you value the taste and enjoyment of coffee. If tea, matcha, or a mostly-milk latte is more your style, this factor might not be as important. For me, who prefers the short americano or drip coffee, this is my number one priority when making my coffee shop pick.
Environment
Lighting, seating space, noise level. The composition of environmental factors that create the "vibe". Is it dark and cozy, bright and spacious, or minimally designed? I prefer a shop with a good natural light (a large window to occasionally gaze out), a few live plants to soften the space, and enough sound dampening as to help drown mute the hustle and bustle. Not all of these need to be perfect, but a general sense of "vibe" must be achieved.
Connection
The personal connections you make with the baristas and other regulars gives a place a third-space feeling. This one might be instant or could take several of visits. Once established, a coffee shop is no longer just a place for coffee but a little social indulgence. Just make small talk if the line is long or take some extra time to get to know the folks in your community. Stumble into conversation with an old friend, the neighboring-table coffee shop patron, or just the barista behind the bar (given they aren't slammed by a wave of orders). Being open to the moment and not using the coffee shop as a fortress of focus can better facilitate serendipitous conversations.
Style
Okay, so this really isn't all that important. However, coffee shops that do it well treat it with artistry and character. A coffee brand creates a culture and persona around the place. It's amazing to see the diverse directions and styles that are explored: minimal, sophisticated, playful, wild. Of course, the coffee is still priority one. But the brand expression paints the personality.
